Milford Reservoir
There is so much to do at Milford Reservoir that it’s hard to pack it all into one weekend.
For starters, there are 11 public use areas on the lake’s shoreline. These include:
- Milford State Park (camping/day use)
- North Overlook Park (day use)
- East Rolling Hills Park (day use)
- West Rolling Hills Park (camping)
- Outlet Park (day use)
- Curtis Creek Public Use Area (camping)
- Farnum Creek Public Use Area (camping)
- Timber Creek Public Use Area (day use)
- Milford Recreational Area (camping/day use)
- Kansas Landscape Arboretum (day use)
- School Creek Public Use Area (camping/day use)
Each park has unique features that bring visitors from all around.
As you can see, Milford Reservoir has ample amounts of recreational opportunities, and my list doesn’t even cover the private campgrounds or municipal campgrounds in Milford and Wakefield.
Milford Reservoir is the largest lake in Kansas that covers more than 16,000 acres and has an average depth of 25 feet.
That means plenty of room for boating, fishing, jet skis and other water recreation.
Fishermen can expect to find walleye, crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white bass and catfish.
There’s a marina located in Milford State Park, as well as two privately owned marinas.
Milford Reservoir is fed by the Republican River which is the river that flows from Outlet Park. This park has a beautiful five mile biking trail that travels along the river and through wooded areas. It’s an out-and-back trail, making it 10 miles total.
Even more trails are in the Milford State Park. There are about 15 miles worth of trails that are open for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The public use areas listed above are operated and maintained by the Kansas Division of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and local city governments. They offer lots of campsites with a variety utility hookups and spacing.
Personally, one of my favorite camping places at Milford Reservoir, Kansas, is Acorns Resort.
Acorns Resort
Acorns Resort is a privately owned campground located on the eastern shore of Milford Reservoir.
This campground is loaded with so many recreational activities, you won’t have to leave the property during your entire stay if you don’t want to.
You’ll need a place to rest your head for starters. Acorns Resort has short-term and long-term RV campsites; as well as custom cabins and Yurts.
Most of the RV campsites are spacious and private. But the group campground by the lake puts campers a little closer to their neighbors.
Acorns Resort has a convenience store (where you check in), a convention center, and a restaurant. The restaurant is a bar and grill with excellent food and drinks (try the Bloody Mary), and outdoor seating with lake views.
Below the restaurant is a swimming beach and canoe/kayak landing, and a private marina. Boat slips, boats and kayaks are available for rent at the convenience store.
Other outdoor activities include a playground, an outdoor concert stage, picnic pavilions, and a hiking trail. The staff also host activities like yoga, games, sunset cruises and more. Some activities are free for guests and some require a fee.
Like I said, Acorns Resort is an incredible place for camping at Milford Reservoir, Kansas. Campsites can fill up quickly so be sure to reserve your trip as soon as you can!
