Hiking the Circle H Trail at Harvey County East Park

The Circle H Trail at Harvey County East Park is a pretty easy hiking trail that takes you through woodlands, next to creeks, and across open meadows.

It’s a fun 3-mile, out-and-back hiking trail near Newton, Kansas, that’s also open for horseback riding.

The trailhead is just north of the lake in a small campground that’s designed for equestrian campers. Parking is available in the campground.

Hiking the Circle H Trail at Harvey County East Park

The first section of the Circle H Hiking Trail goes through woods and next to the lake. Here, you can see all kinds of wildlife, especially water fowl, living their best lives.

The hiking trail goes out of the woods and takes you through open meadows and grasslands. You’ll cross through a few hedgerows and go back into woodlands.

Keep your eye out for poison ivy. I didn’t see any on the hiking trail, but it wasn’t far off the path.

The Circle H Hiking Trail is interesting because it has a lot of twists and turns. In some parts, you’re in dense woods, and in other parts, you’re looking across the landscape.

The End of the Hiking Trail

You’ll eventually come to a road crossing. After you cross the road, you’ll be in dense woods for a little while, and then it opens back up again. I saw wild rose bushes in this section.

You’ll know when you’ve reached the end of the hiking trail because there’s a “Private Land” sign. From here, you just turn around and hike back the way you came.

Bonus Hike: The Osage Nature Trail links up with the Circle H Trail. The Osage Nature Trail offers a few more miles of hiking, and has some interesting features like creek beds, bridges, and optional loops.

I always enjoy hiking the Circle H Trail at Harvey County East Park. It’s one of the trails I come back to quite often.

If you’re looking for hiking trails near Wichita or Newton, this is one I’d recommend.

Safe Travels!
