Cross Timbers State Park is on the north side of Toronto Reservoir. The majority of the lake’s campsites are in this park. The campsites are shaded and have easy access to the lake.
You’ll love fishing here! The lake and river are excellent for white crappie, white bass, flathead catfish and channel catfish. You might also find black bass, bluegill and sunfish tugging at your line.
The park is well-known for its hiking trails. There are more than 12 miles of trails in Cross Timbers State Park.
The Chautauqua Hills Trail is the longest trail on the reservoir. It’s open to hikers, mountain bikers and runners. With a special permit, you’re allowed to camp on the trail in designated spots.
The Chautauqua Hills Trail goes through deep woods and open prairie, and it has optional loops to adjust the length of your hike.
The Ancient Trees Trail is the other hiking trail in Cross Timbers State Park. In 1982, scientists analyzed the tree rings of 26 post oak trees in this area. The one-mile interpretive Ancient Trees Trail gets you near 14 of the analyzed trees.
To protect the trees, the Ancient Trees Trail is only open to hikers. Mountain biking and running is prohibited on this trail.
